Legal assistant

Job purpose: Undertake a variety of data gathering, chasing and information recording activities, on behalf of a fee earner, to facilitate the rapid settlement of cases and the closure of files.

  • Graduate in law or law related subject with previous RTA paralegal experience would be an advantage however training will be provided for the right candidate.
  • The daily legal assistant duties will involve but may not be limited to;
  • Follow up on outstanding instructions, documents and other actions to ensure that responses are received within required timescales. 
  • Make payment requests using the appropriate payment request process for the client and chase to ensure payments are received and dispatched within required deadlines 
  • Complete initial steps in recovery of our client’s claim 
  • To ensure compliance with the SRA Code of Conduct 2011. 
  • Undertake additional ad hoc duties to support fee earners and the team as required, which may include: 
  • Arranging medical appointments for claimants 
  • File closure/transfer activities
  • Contacting medical agencies to ensure medical reports are received within required timescales. 
  • Undertaking telephone negotiations with credit hire organisations 
  • Pursuing settlement as quickly as possible 
  • Liaising with insurers and other interested parties where necessary

Experience, skills and qualifications

  • Law graduate or experience of working in a legal environment desirable 
  • Ability to use own initiative 
  • Ability to plan and prioritise workloads 
  • Excellent listening and verbal communication skills 
  • Good telephone negotiation skills 
  • Ability to recognise when sensitivity and tact are required 
  • Ability to make decisions 
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure 
  • Good IT skills including Word, Outlook, and experience of a case management system preferred

Working hours: 

This is a full time position with core working hours of 35 per week.
