Please note - this is a fixed term contract until the end of the year

Scope of the role

This position is a management role combining line management responsibility for a team of editors and full responsibility for the delivery of the team's publishing programme in all media, including frontlist. In addition the role will include responsibility for a number of key cross-department projects, including direct management of some of those projects.

Purpose of the role

  • To manage team publishing programme including frontlist, in all media, to ensure that the publishing plan for all product is met with respect to quality, deadlines and cost.
  • To manage overall team performance to ensure milestones and targets are met, taking a proactive, problem-solving approach.
  • To act as line manager to individual editors within the team, taking first stage responsibility for all human resources issues including issues of quality control and disciplinary matters.
  • To take an active role in strategic and project planning of the department, liaising with, and developing relationships with, other teams/departments and authors/publishers where appropriate.
  • To be responsible for key projects as applicable.

Role responsibilities

  • To ensure that products are published to the highest possible standards across all media outputs.
  • To drive for results and take a pro-active problem-solving approach to issues arising on all titles, especially on designated key titles, in order to meet company targets wherever possible.
  • To attend handover meetings with publishing representatives for new product and accurately assess whether new material is suitable for handover and commencement of editorial work.
  • To allocate accepted new product within the team (utilising the freelance budget where necessary) taking into account publishing timetables, financial profile of titles, and existing workload of the team.
  • To ensure that required company standards, agreed schedules and appropriate cost management specifications are met for all product.
  • To be aware of the financial profile of all titles within the team and communicate this to line reports.
  • To monitor progress of all titles and produce monthly reports monitoring and forecasting progress against the publishing plan.
  • To monitor workload of team members on an ongoing basis and reallocate resources within the team as the need arises in order to meet the publishing programme.

Line management

  • To build high performing teams by communicating company strategy to team members and setting challenging goals.
  • To lead through personal excellence and encourage motivation and commitment in team members.
  • To agree objectives and conduct regular appraisals for all line reports to ensure that performance against objectives is effectively monitored and agreed performance targets are met.
  • To support line reports' career development through regularly reviewing training and development plans.
  • To recruit new editors when required, including interviewing and selection, and to ensure that they are provided with the necessary support and development via allocation of mentors and participation in the training programme.
  • To ensure that all new editors within the team reach the agreed performance standards at the probation review and the twelve month review point.
  • To manage performance issues and disciplinary/grievance procedures in line with company policy.
  • To lead the team through change initiatives as required.

General

  • To maximise the effectiveness of the team and department as a whole, making suggestions for enhancements (e.g. to processes) and to drive the implementation of change as required.
  • To regularly review and improve editorial processes and liaise as necessary with other sites to ensure consistent application of standards and working practices.
  • To develop and maintain key contacts and effective working relationships with other company functions to ensure the smooth running of the team as it interrelates to other departments.
  • To deliver key projects as allocated, reporting regularly on progress against agreed milestones and evaluating and managing resource requirements effectively.
