New approach to CPD will allow solicitors to tailor programmes to their own needs

updated on 18 February 2015

Following public consultation last year, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) has confirmed that changes to continuing professional development (CPD) will come into force from 1 April this year.

The plans have been approved by super-regulator the Legal Services Board and will allow solicitors to tailor their CPD programme more specifically to their own needs. Currently, CPD is based on completing a set number of hours of events and seminars. The new approach requires solicitors to "regularly reflect" on their practice and implement a development programme accordingly. While solicitors can choose to move to the more flexible approach from April, the system will not be applicable to everyone until 1 November 2015.

Julie Brannan, director of education and training at the SRA, said: "Our new approach enables us to uphold standards while also permitting solicitors and firms to determine training and development according to their specific needs and learning styles. It is a much more rigorous approach than at present as solicitors will need to think hard about what they need to do on a regular basis to ensure they remain competent to practise."
