London boroughs to provide University of Law apprenticeships; Bond Dickinson hiring more apprentices

updated on 27 March 2015

The University of Law  has linked up with several London boroughs to provide its first Higher Apprenticeships in Legal Services.

A total of 10 Level 4 apprenticeships will be provided by a number of the city’s boroughs, including Hillingdon, Islington, Barnet and Harrow. As ever, the apprenticeships will combine on-the-job training with more traditional learning. Apprentices will work four days a week in the legal departments at their local authorities and spend one day a week learning at The University of Law’s London Bloomsbury centre.

Rajesh Alagh, a borough solicitor for Hillingdon, said: "We’re very pleased to be working with The University of Law on this exciting new apprenticeship. The council's legal apprenticeship scheme has already been a great success, with apprentices showing great enthusiasm and dedication, so we are pleased to be able to extend this through our partnership with ULaw for another two years. It will allow our apprentices to progress to a Higher Level Apprenticeship (Level 4), which is the equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. This is a fantastic opportunity for them to develop essential work based skills while studying for a nationally recognised qualification with the United Kingdom's largest law school."

In other apprenticeships news, national law firm Bond Dickinson has announced that it will be hiring another three apprentices to join its Plymouth office, following the initial establishment of its apprenticeship programme in 2014. Craig Moore, finance and investment partner at Bond Dickinson and head of its Plymouth office, said: "Our first three legal apprentices have fitted in extremely well and are each contributing very successfully to the work of their teams. Their experiences at work are being continuously underpinned by the knowledge and skills they are gaining through the units taught by CILEx Law School, and their confidence and technical ability have both really flourished during the short period they have been with us."
