Law and business news round-up: Standard & Poor’s, inflation, Netflix, third runway

What with Brexit and Trump v Clinton, there is a lot of juicy news to fill newspaper columns at the moment. However, tear yourself away from global political implosion to consider the business world (also affected by said implosion) and the hot topics from the last week:
- Powerful US ratings agency Standard & Poor’s has warned that the United Kingdom may lose its reserve currency status if it does not secure access to the European single market post-Brexit.
- Inflation has hit a two-year high of 1%, driven by rising petrol and clothing prices. The Bank of England, IMF and leading economists agree that inflation likely to hit 3% by the end of 2017.
- Netflix shares soar as subscriber numbers surge by 3.2 million, a much higher number than experts were predicting.
- The head of the Airports Commission has demanded a swift parliamentary vote on the third runway, warning that “we should not take the view that we can’t build an economically rational thing in an environmentally sensible way just because a few people will argue about it”.
