Law and business news round-up: Heathrow, Hermes, AT&T, Brexit

Amid the building excitement around Halloween, don’t get so entirely caught up with how to be the most convincing zombie at the party that you forget what October is really all about – preparing to meet future employers at law fairs and wow them with your commerciality. To keep you on track, cast a (cycloptic) eye over this collection of (not very) ghoulish stories:
- The biggest news this week was the approval of Heathrow’s expansion to create a third runway. The implications have already been felt: Zac Goldmsith has resigned as MP for Richmond, Sadiq Khan said the decision was “wrong for London and Britain”, and Chris Grayling (much beloved by the legal profession) has suggested building a ramp over the M25.
- Nationwide delivery company Hermes is to face investigation into its employment practices, with allegations that it is paying its couriers below the national minimum wage.
- Hitting a new high for mega-deals, AT&T is to buy Time Warner for $85 billion; among other assets, Time Warner owns HBO, CNN and Warner Brothers. Objections have already been raised to the merger, uniting people you wouldn’t normally expect to be on the same side of the fence – to whit, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump.
- Fears of a massive slowdown in growth post-referendum have been allayed by figures that show the economy has performed better than expected, with 0.5% growth in the third quarter of 2016.
