As Black Friday dawned, retailers steeled themselves for hordes of bargain-hungry shoppers. Will the frenzied purchasing have an effect on the economic fortunes of those on the high street? John Lewis reckons so. Tales of shopping and much more to follow:
- John Lewis is forecasting record online sales today, Black Friday, with traffic on its website from midnight to 6am up 307% from Black Friday 2013.
- Also on something of a shopping spree, and keen to secure a slice of the mobile pie, BT has revealed that it is in talks with Telefoncia to buy back O2 – the company it sold in 2001, in a deal which has been described as “one of the worst strategic errors in UK corporate history”.
- Coming over the pond; US prosecutors intent on quizzing UK traders at the heart of the currency rate manipulation scandal have arrived in London. Fines related to the manipulation have already reached $10 billion and could go higher still.
- For a while there, you couldn’t swing a cat for articles about the dynamic BRICS countries (ie, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) and their surging economies. So where are they now?
- Far from music to their ears: the passing of a new UK law allowing fans to copy legally purchased music is being fought by the UK music industry, as it calls for a judicial review of the legislation.
