Email constitutes major security risk for law firms

updated on 31 October 2014

Lawyers believe that email is the biggest security risk to law firms, according to a survey conducted by logistics operator DX.

DX surveyed 100 legal professionals and found that 57% believed email to be a bigger risk to a law firm or company’s business than the risks posed by physical mail. The survey also found that over half of respondents knew of at least one incident of an email being sent to the wrong person in the last 12 months.

Of course, it seems obvious that a survey conducted by a mail operator would find that physical mail is seen as less risky than email (while DX has also conveniently announced the launch of a secure electronic mail encryption service), but the issue of cyber security and diligence when conducting sensitive correspondence at work is a salient one for aspiring lawyers to bear in mind – while encryption is also a solution well worth considering for confidential mails.
