Co-op reveals family law division and charter

updated on 21 September 2012

The Co-operative Group launched its family law operation on 20 September, further evidence of the crucial role this organisation is playing in the post-Legal Services Act world.

It has a customer charter, with five standards that offer "a refreshingly different approach to family law". They include fixed fees, jargon-free communication, sensitive case handling and a commitment to "helping clients reach the best possible outcome for themselves and their family". Services will cover divorce, child protection, mediation and financial issues. Clients will be able to use a phone-based service or meet with an adviser face to face, initially in London but later in five regional hubs across England and Wales.

Martyn Wates, deputy group chief executive of The Co-operative Group, said: "At a time of major changes in Legal Aid, we believe it's vital to make it as easy as possible for people to gain access to justice. We are doing this by providing an innovative approach that will appeal to those who are currently reluctant to access family law services."
