Law and business: commercial news round-up 08.11.13

It's week eight everyone; this commercial awareness news digest just keeps on coming. Here we have a selection of some of the most interesting business stories that appeared this week:
- There was quite a contrast between the fortunes of two of the UK's most well-known banks - HSBC reported a massive surge in profits, while the Co-op announced branch closures in 2014.
- M&S boss Marc Bolland was feeling gloomy, as he said there was no evidence of increased consumer confidence, reflected in the company’s ninth quarterly consecutive fall in profits.
- Twitter was valued at a massive £19 billion as it launched on New York Stock Exchange. Not bad for a company that has never made any profit (although it does have 250 million users).
- Some people look forward to this every year - the John Lewis Xmas ad! The importance of building a strong retail brand is never more important than at Christmas time - the Guardian explains why.
