Data from the Office for National Statistics revealed that total revenues for the UK legal industry fell to £4.68 billion in April 2025 – an 8% decline compared to March.
Despite the month-on-month decrease, April still ranked as the fourth-highest revenue month in the past year. However, it fell slightly below the 12-month average of £4.83 billion and was 2.5% lower than April 2024’s figures.
The overall services sector, which includes legal services, generated £232.7 billion in revenue in April 2025 – an 11% decline from March 2025. However, this figure represents a slight year-on-year increase of 0.04% compared to April 2024.
Legal services regulatory partner at Kingsley Napley LLP, Julie Norris, commented: “April revenues are usually lower than March figures considering typical financial year ends but we also know that the economy overall contracted in April so there are various factors which might explain today’s data. However, April is further evidence that we remain in choppy performance territory at the moment – the revenue graph is not a linear growth picture. Law firm leaders should therefore continue to be vigilant in their planning and prudent on costs considering this context.”
