Paralegal (dispute resolution)

The practice

The firm has over 230 fee earners across its four offices in London, Birmingham, Leeds and Southampton. The firm acts for over 200 clients, including all forms of NHS provider and commissioner organisations, the Department of Health, the NHSLA, regulatory bodies, charities, independent healthcare providers, housing associations, medical malpractice insurers and defence organisations.   

The dispute resolution department comprises over 50 fee earners and acts for:

  • NHS, voluntary and commercial sector bodies, undertaking litigation concerning commercial, regulatory and public law issues;
  • regulatory bodies, investigating and prosecuting fitness to practise cases, and handling appeals and strategic issues for them;
  • NHS England in performance managing practitioners (including doctors, dentists and opticians) at a local level; and
  • a varied caseload of commercial, fraud, property, environmental and regulatory litigation for the NHS and other healthcare bodies from the voluntary, public and private sectors.

The role

The regulatory team is looking to recruit two paralegals on a permanent basis to assist on regulatory casework. The main roles and responsibilities will include (although, this is not an exhaustive list):

  • supporting fee earners in aspects of their casework;
  • working to an annual chargeable hours target;
  • witness liaison;
  • preparing witness statements; 
  • instructing experts;
  • putting together trial bundles; 
  • attending conferences with Counsel/ experts/clients;
  • attending hearings before statutory committees (not advocacy); and
  • any other duties as reasonably requested.

Candidate specification

Candidates should ideally have:

  • an LPC or BVC qualification;
  • current/recent experience of working for regulators / within the regulatory arena;
  • good drafting skills;
  • good communication skills;
  • good administration skills; and
  • basic computer skills.

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate at interview that they:

  • have good attention to detail;
  • are well organised;
  • are able to work well under pressure;
  • are proactive; and
  • self motivated.

£22,000 plus eligibility for bonus
