updated on 29 April 2019

The five ‘magic circle’ firms have revealed their partner promotions for 2019, with women making up just 29% of this year’s promotions.

Allen & Overy promoted 34 lawyers to the partnership worldwide, eight of whom (24%) were women, including four women being promoted at the London office. As the Law Gazette reports, the firm would not say how many women were among the total number of candidates it considered for this promotion round.

Clifford Chance awarded 30 promotions, with women making up 10 of the firm’s new partners. The firm said the ratio was in line with its long-term diversity goal of raising the percentage of women partners from the current 20% to 30%.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer promoted 22 lawyers across its offices, including eight women. Of the eight promotions at the London office, one of the new partners is a woman.

Linklaters made up 33 new partners overall, 11 of whom were women. In the London office there were 11 partner promotions, but only one went to a woman.

Meanwhile, Slaughter and May awarded two promotions, both to men.
