Law and business news round-up: tobacco, Ryanair, Brexit, quinoa, pink bunnies

As we are just weeks away from the EU referendum, the campaigning on both sides is reaching fever pitch, with one of the most hotly contested areas of debate the economic implications of in or out. For this, and more business news from the past week, see below:
- The BBC’s economics editor Kamal Ahmed has analysed the latest figures Brexit forecast, issued by the International Monetary Fund.
- Tobacco was in the firing line this week, with a Court of Appeal judgment that saw the industry lose in its fight against plain packaging, and insurance giant AXA announcing that it is to stop investing in an industry that has such “high economic and human costs”.
- Consumers could soon be reaping the rewards of an aviation price war, as Ryanair announced that it was to reduce prices by an average of 7%.
- The Competition Authority is pretty cross about the proposed selling-off of the Land Registry, stating that to do so would “grant the new owner a monopoly on commercially valuable data with no incentive to improve access”.
- And the fight that everyone has been waiting to see – two pink bunnies duke it out over which has the right to represent a battery company! Energizer and Duracell are squaring up in the US courts over use of the world’s most energetic rabbit.
- Finally, quinoa may no longer be the hippest grain around, but it has significant economic value to those countries that grow and export it. The Economist explains why its prices are dropping.
