Law and business: commercial news round-up 26.11.15

As Black Friday looms (and the proponents of Civilised Saturday attempt to provide an alternative), retailers will be hoping for some big spending, especially in light of news that sales on the UK high street in October were significantly down. For this and more commercially-minded stories from the past week, read on:
- It was a big week for Chancellor George Osborne: on Monday he gloomily announced that the UK deficit is the worst it has been for six years…
- ... but on Wednesday managed to pull “£23 billion from the back of the sofa” (as Robert Peston puts it) and, among other things, cancel his unpopular tax credit cuts.
- Pharma giant Pfizer is buying Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox, in a record-breaking healthcare deal worth $160 billion.
- It seems that car manufacturers are stalling, as Rolls-Royce announces that it is in the grip of a major restructuring in a bid to cut costs, and Jaguar issues a profit warning, prompted in part by an explosion at a Chinese port and the costs associated with a new manufacturing plant.
