University advocacy day at Gray's Inn

This is a unique opportunity for students who want to become barristers and are not yet a member of an Inn of Court.

The event is free of charge with subsidised travel and will comprise talks on advocacy, scholarships, the role of the Inns and also offer you an opportunity to be taught advocacy and ethics by eminent members of the profession.

The event will end with a reception hosted by The Treasurer of Gray’s Inn, Lady Hale who is the recently appointed President of the Supreme Court. Many pupil barristers, barristers and judges will be invited.

It is by application only so please see below for link to online application.

NB this event is on the same day as the pupillage fair (which takes place10am to 5pm) and so you would have the opportunity to attend both.

The programme

Talk on advocacy from Michael Fordham QC of Blackstone Chambers, Master of the Bench of Gray’s Inn and fellow of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law

Talks from Master of students, Ali Bajwa QC, Master of scholarships and director of education  

Advocacy and ethics training with barristers such as:

The day will end with a drinks and canapés reception in Hall hosted by judicial and barrister members of the Inn who sit and/or practise in all areas of law and at all levels.

The Inn will confirm by email that week whether your application has been successful. 

Important details

  • The event is free of charge
  • Dependent on location and need, the Inn will contribute funding for travel.  
  • A drinks/canapés reception will follow the training day
  • Due to physical space restrictions and the need to limit the number of students in each advocacy group, places available are limited. 
  • If you attended one of our University Advocacy Days in previous years you should not apply to attend this event.
  • You may apply on this occasion and not be successful in gaining a place. Don’t let that put you off. Should we be oversubscribed, we will endeavour to run future advocacy days. 
  • This advocacy day is provided for university students interested in a career at the Bar and who are not yet members of an Inn.
