Firm description and career prospects

Shulmans is an award-winning, UK top 200 corporate law firm which occupies state-of-the-art prestigious offices in the heart of Leeds, one of the UK's most important legal centres. Our turnover has grown organically by over 50% in the last three years, in a generally flat economy. We have acheived this purely and simply by providing a first-class professional service to our clients and attracting the most talented individuals to work with us.

We are a leading member of Interlegal, a network of like-minded law firms located around the world. This extends the international reach of the firm's work and offers the possibility of trainee solicitor exchanges with other law firms in the network, where an individual has requisite language skills (as an example, one of our trainee solicitors recently spent a month working at the Interlegal member firm in Germany).

Who should apply

We are looking for well-rounded candidates who can demonstrate intellect balanced with common sense to provide expert and practical solutions for our clients. Academically, we prefer a 2.1 degree (whether from a law background or otherwise) but we will consider those applicants who may have just missed out.

We provide an excellent salary and benefits package, which includes payment of LPC fees and the opportunity to take an interest-free loan of up to £5,000, repayable by monthly instalments during your training contract.

Training contract programme

As a trainee solicitor at Shulmans, you will be challenged but also supported and rewarded. You will be given the same quality of work that you would get at a large national firm, but with the benefits of a friendly, down-to-earth environment that a regional firm can provide.

Our 'Legal Beginnings' scheme provides successful applicants with the opportunity to spend haf-a-day with us, four times a year, in the two-year period before your training contract commences so that you can get to know your colleagues and what working at Shulmans involves, and develop some key skills well in advance of your first day as a trainee solicitor.

Types of work

We serve all sectors of the business world, acting for a full range of clients from an enviable list of PLC and institutional clients to business start-ups and private individuals. To complement our core practice areas, we also provide a wide range of specialist practice areas, including: employment; intellectual property; healthcare; insolvency; public sector and procurement; construction; and many others.

Each trainee has a mentor who can provide advice and guidance. There was also a good sense of camaraderie amongst the trainees and it was always good to know that there was someone I could talk to who was in a similar position to me.

Shulmans provides a friendly and supportive working environment where trainees are treated as valuable members of the team. The training I received was comprehensive, both in terms of the high level of responsibility and the wide variety of legal work I was given.
