Paralegal (employment)

The employment department comprises 45 fee earners and, as the UK’s leading supplier of employment law services to NHS bodies, carries out work for around 100 healthcare bodies throughout the UK. The department is able to provide legal advice and training on the full range of employment law issues, from board level to generalist HR practitioner, and has a reputation for handling the most sensitive and high-profile employment law cases.

The role

This very busy department is seeking a paralegal to support the fee earners on general employment work. The main roles and responsibilities will include:

  • working to a chargeable hours target;
  • assisting fee earners in aspects of their casework, especially on handling contentious cases;
  • preparing cases for tribunal;
  • attendance at tribunals;
  • liaising by telephone and in writing with third parties, including experts, solicitors, witnesses, claimants and the tribunal as appropriate
  • drafting general correspondence;
  • preparing cost schedules;
  • gathering and assimilating evidence;
  • attending to disclosure and inspection of documents
  • drafting chronologies;
  • bundling including preparing joint bundle indexes and updating bundles;
  • research;
  • copying and pagination;
  • basic legal analysis;
  • assisting in the preparation of articles, seminars and best practice advice; and 
  • any other duties as reasonably requested.

Supervision, support and relevant training will be provided although the successful applicant will also be encouraged, where appropriate, to use their own initiative.

Candidate specification

Candidates should ideally have:

  • at least twelve months experience as a paralegal and at least six months experience in an employment department
  • an LPC or BVC qualification;
  • good communication skills;
  • good administration skills; and
  • basic computer skills.

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate at interview that they are:

  • well organised;
  • proactive; and
  • self-motivated.
