Paralegal (dispute resolution)

Our legal organisation focuses on connecting our customers’ businesses to the ever-changing legal and regulatory environment. We provide critical online and print information, decision support tools, software and services to lawyers who practice in law firms, in corporate legal departments and in the public sector. We are a growing business in the UK, especially since the acquisition of Practical Law Company in March 2013 and we are very excited about the next stage in our growth and how you can play a part in it.

Job purpose

The paralegal will provide support to the editorial team in the dispute resolution practice area in the following areas: ASK Practical Law, a query service for subscriber which enables subscribers to get in touch with the people behind the resources to ask questions, research, administration, writing and publishing.

Key activities

Ensuring ASK queries are appropriately allocated and answered within a reasonable time frame, including answering Ask questions as appropriate.

Publishing Ask answers, ensuring that all proof-reading and second editing is done to a high standard so that published content has minimal typographical, spelling or grammar errors and that all links are made accurately.

Reviewing published Ask answers and supporting the process of ensuring that answers are reflected or incorporated as appropriate into maintained content.

Supporting and developing the SharePoint Ask system within dispute resolution to maximise subscriber experience including by coaching the team, investigating any issues and acting as a liaison. Encouraging completion of appropriate data fields and compliance with ASK rules. Routinely maintaining operational reports in relation to Ask.

More generally, supporting other members of the team to carry out daily trawls of relevant websites and other sources and then identifying items and developments of interest to subscribers. Reviewing and proofing materials for the website. Writing short items for the website. Maintaining a number of materials on the website, including the case and legislation trackers. General administration duties. 

Qualifications

Personal experience required:

  1. Completed the GDL (or have a law degree), LPC or the BVC - this must be demonstrated on your CV. 
  2. Degree educated; 2.1 or above. 
  3. Three A levels; grades A-C or equivalent, minimum 300 UCAS points. 
  4. Demonstrate an interest in dispute resolution, ideally through either work experience or as part of an academic course (desirable). 
  5. The ability to learn quickly and to assimilate complex information. 

Technical skills: 

  1. Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications. 
  2. A working knowledge of legal research databases and strong research skills. 
  3. Good writing skills. 
  4. Accurate proofing skills. 

Interpersonal skills:

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  2. Be able to see other people's points of view and take on board feedback. 
  3. Positive attitude and "can do" approach. 

Personal skills:

  1. Highly self-motivated and well organised. 
  2. Good time management skills. Ability to prioritise a varied workload and co-ordinate work from numerous sources. 
  3. Willingness to take instructions from a number of individuals and prioritise. 
  4. Excellent attention to detail. 
  5. Ability to work well under pressure to meet tight deadlines. 
  6. Ability to review and assimilate information from a number of different sources.
