Paralegal - real estate

Please note that this role will be based with the Practical Law Company (PLC), now part of Thomson Reuters, Legal.

Practical Law Company

Practical Law Company provides premium legal information services for law firms and major companies and financial institutions. The services consist of continually maintained online databases of practice notes, standard documents and other materials, together with weekly and monthly e-mail updates.

Job purpose

The paralegal will provide support to the editorial teams in the real estate (including environment, construction and property) services in the following areas: research, administration, writing and publishing.

Key activities

  1. Carrying out daily trawls of relevant websites and other sources and identifying items and developments of interest to subscribers.
  2. Reviewing and proofing materials for the website.
  3. Writing short items for the website.
  4. Maintaining a number of materials on the website, including the case and legislation trackers.
  5. General administration duties

Key skills and knowledge

Personal experience

  1. Completed the GDL (or have a law degree), LPC or the BVC.
  2. Degree educated; 2.1 or above
  3. Three A levels; grades A-C or equivalent, minimum 300 UCAS points
  4. Demonstrate an interest in environment, construction or property law, ideally through either work experience or as part of an academic course (desirable).
  5. The ability to learn quickly and to assimilate complex information.

Technical skills

  1. Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications.
  2. A working knowledge of legal research databases.
  3. Good writing skills.
  4. Accurate proofing skills.

Interpersonal skills

  1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  2. Be able to see other people's points of view and take on board feedback.
  3. Positive attitude and "can do" approach.
  4. Team player

Personal skills

  1. Highly self-motivated and well organised.
  2. Good time management skills. Ability to prioritise a varied workload and co-ordinate work from numerous sources.
  3. Willingness to take instructions from a number of individuals and prioritise.
  4. Excellent attention to detail.
  5. Ability to work well under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  6. Ability to review and assimilate information from a number of different sources.
