Paralegal - tax (Practical Law Company).

Our legal organisation focuses on connecting our customers' businesses to the ever-changing legal and regulatory environment.  We provide critical online and print information, decision support tools, software and services to lawyers who practice in law firms, in corporate legal departments and in the public sector. We are a growing business in the UK, especially since the acquisition of Practical Law Company in March 2013 and we are very excited about the next stage in our growth and how you can play a part in it.

Position title: paralegal – tax (Practical Law Company)

Role purpose/ summary:

The tax paralegal will provide support to the tax editorial team in the following areas: research, subscriber queries, administration, writing and publishing.

Major responsibilities/accountabilities:

  • Carrying out daily trawls of relevant websites and other sources and identifying items and developments of interest to Practical Law tax, Practical Law private client and Practical Law share schemes & incentives subscribers.
  • Handling subscriber queries. This involves allocating queries to appropriate editors, researching and drafting answers, editing, coding and publishing questions and answers on the Practical Law site ("Ask PLC"), handling follow-up queries and acting as the group’s central knowledge point for Ask PLC (testing and recording updated processes, liaising with the IT and client relations teams, training and supporting new team members).
  • Creating and sending the Practical Law tax daily, weekly and monthly e-mails to subscribers.
  • Reviewing and proofing materials for the Practical Law tax website. Adding related content and other links.
  • Writing short items for the Practical Law tax website.
  • Maintaining a number of materials on the Practical Law tax website, including the tax case tracker and the list of resources and contributors.
  • Assisting with Practical Law’s coverage of the annual budget and Autumn statement, including sourcing relevant materials on the day, creating and sending an overnight e-mail and assisting with follow-up coverage. 
  • Providing cover for the Practical Law private client and Practical Law SSI paralegals and, on occasion, other Practical Law services. This includes trawling and creating and sending daily, weekly and monthly e-mails to subscribers.   
  • General administration duties.
Mandatory skills and experience required: 
  • Proficient user of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Confident user of IT generally. 
  • A working knowledge of legal research databases.
  • Good writing skills.
  • Accurate proofing skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. 
  • Highly self-motivated, well organized, hard-working and conscientious. 
  • Good time management skills. Ability to prioritise a varied workload and co-ordinate work from numerous sources. 
  • Willingness to take instructions from a number of individuals and prioritise.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work well under pressure to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to review and assimilate information from a number of different sources.
Desirable skills and experience: 
  • Have an interest in tax law, ideally through either work experience or as part of an academic course.
Education/certifications required: 
  • Degree educated, ideally no less than 2.1 and ideally have completed the LPC/BPTC or equivalent.
