We provide critical online and print information, decision support tools, software and services to lawyers who practice in law firms, in corporate legal departments and in the public sector. FastDraft is our [market-leading] document automation tool which helps lawyers (whether they work in-house, in private practice or elsewhere) create their documents faster by completing an online questionnaire on the Practical Law website. It’s available on more than 200 documents across practice areas such as property, family, private client, employment, corporate and commercial. 
 
The role of the legal documentation editor is:
  • To analyse pre-existing legal documents drafted by our large team of experienced lawyer-editors and to identify their underlying logic (as opposed their legal validity) 
  • To break down legal documents into their component parts 
  • To devise online questionnaires 
  • To input the components parts and questionnaires, using sophisticated [xml and html]. 
  • The role also includes amending legal documents that have already been automated so that they continue to be up to date with current law and practice. 
  • In addition to working alongside our team of lawyers, the role also involves working closely with our technology and product management teams. 
Key responsibilities:
  • Analysing legal documents and identifying their underlying logic 
  • Breaking down standard documents into their component parts 
  • Devising online questionnaires 
  • Inputting the components parts and questionnaires using sophisticated [xml and html] 
  • Amending legal documents that have already been automated so that they continue to be up to date with current law and practice. 
  • Liaising with members of our team of lawyer-editors, 
  • Liaising with members of the technology team, in particular detailed testing of the content aspects of each new software release 
  • Liaising with release members of our product management team on product development projects.
Key skills and experience required:
 
Technical skills: 
  1. Microsoft Office 
  2. A working knowledge of legal research databases – desirable, not essential. 
  3. Good legal drafting, analytical and writing skills – desirable, not essential 
Interpersonal skills: 
  1. Able to work and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with lawyer-editors, technology and product management at all levels of seniority. 
  2. Work collaboratively as part of a team in order to deliver projects on time and budget. 
Personal skills: 
  1. Able to work with limited direct supervision, either by themselves or as part of a team. 
  2. Self motivated and pro-active. 
  3. Excellent attention to detail and proof-reading 
  4. Tenacity in solving problems and getting the job done 
  5. The ability to learn quickly and to assimilate complex information 
Personal experience: 
  1. Degree educated, ideally no less than 2.1 
  2. Worked in legal sector 
  3. LPC or equivalent – desirable but not essential 
  4. HTML, XML or other programming language – desirable but not essential.
