The business of business crime
I recently met a criminal solicitor at a party, who seemed quite negative about his career choice. I got the impression that commercial legal work was a 'safer' bet, but I really can’t see myself doing corporate and property transactions for the rest of my career. Is there no half-way house?
Going to the Bar?
I’ve just started the second year of my law degree and want to become a human rights barrister. I keep hearing people say that only Oxbridge students get pupillages. Is this true?
All things considered
I flunked my finals due to worry and stress about personal family matters. How understanding are recruiters likely to be about my bad degree result?
Placement scheming
I am currently studying the LPC after graduating with a 2.1 in law. I've not yet done a vac scheme and am wondering whether it's placements I should be applying for or training contracts? I don't want to risk getting on vac schemes and missing out on a training contract; nor do I want to risk applying for training contracts without solid work experience.
Want to go pro?
I'm really keen to get involved in pro bono activities, but I don't know how to get started. Can you point me in the right direction?
Combining PT and FT
I’m thinking about applying for a part-time GDL course although I’m concerned that combining a full-time job with studying an unfamiliar subject will be too much to handle. What do you think?
Networking works
I'm still only a student but someone told me that I need to network with lawyers already. Is this true? How do I do it?
Beginning of a great adventure
Since completing my LPC in 2007 I've worked as a paralegal while at the same time applying for training contracts. After five years on a terrible wage I'm ready to move on, but I have no idea where I can go from here. Any ideas?
Qualification deliberation
Is it possible to change the area you qualify into? For example, if I qualify as a property solicitor, can I then change to be an employment solicitor? Would I need to obtain some extra qualifications and how long does the process take?
Which way to the fair?
Everyone tells me that I should be attending law fairs if I want to meet firms and recruiters, but what's the best way to find out when they are?
Experimenting with law
I recently graduated with a master's in physics and now plan on going into law. As part of my research, I looked at the backgrounds of practitioners and found that scientist-turned-solicitors are few and far between (apart from in niche areas such as patent law). Is my background a disadvantage or could it be a benefit?
Close but no cigar
I've just started my LPC. This summer I applied to 20 firms for training contracts and had three interviews but didn't score - what do I do now?
Serious summertime
I've just finished the first year of my law degree. What can I be doing over the summer break in preparation for my second year of study and the training contract applications to come?
Following suit
I've managed to get some training contract interviews. What should I wear?
The wrong side of the law
I am a second-year law student currently serving a two-year driving disqualification for drink driving. Could this conviction prevent me from becoming a corporate lawyer?
Time to teach?
I did a law degree with a view to training as a lawyer, but have decided that I'm not ready for a legal career yet (although it is something that I'm interested in going back to in the future). Is there some kind of time limit after which I'll have to do my law degree again before training as a solicitor?
Paralegal my way into practice?
I know that it has become harder to secure a training contract these days, but I have also noticed that there seem to be increasing opportunities for paralegals: would becoming a paralegal be a more certain way of pursuing a career as a solicitor?
Help! I'm not in the A Team
I'm currently doing my LPC and have secured a 2.1 law degree, but I've been receiving a lot of rejections for training contracts. I suspect they might be due largely to my awful A-levels. Do I have any hope of getting a training contract?
Mates’ rates
I have been offered a training contract that I have accepted with a firm which recently sent an advertisement to my father. He is wondering if I could ask for a "family discount" for legal advice, but, as I haven't even started yet, I think it seems a bit forward. What do you think?
Join the team
A lot of fellow applicants emphasise the importance of sports when applying to firms because it shows team effort. I'm not sporty but I do volunteer for Citizens Advice and Victim Support. Is that enough to demonstrate my team skills?
Time is tight
I am hoping to start my LPC in September and am currently applying for training contracts. A number of the firms I am looking at specify where the LPC should be studied, which creates a timing issue because I will need to have confirmed my LPC place before I have been offered a training contract. Are firms flexible as to where I study in such circumstances?
Interview from abroad?
I am a penultimate-year non-law student on a year abroad and I'm looking to apply for summer vacation placements. Many firms only accept applications from final-year non-law students and hold assessment days which, because I am abroad, I could not attend. Would firms allow me to do a telephone interview?
Honing your commercial skills
In my search for a career in law, all I ever seem to read about is commercial awareness. As an undergraduate, how am I expected to possess this? Are there any short courses, tailored for students, which you would recommend?
Defer to common sense
I have received offers for law school, but don't have a training contract or much financial support. I was thinking about getting a job for a year to save some money, but I'd have to defer my place. Is this a good or bad idea?
All about skills
I'm thinking of changing career direction and pursuing law, but I'm not convinced that I've got what it takes. What skills and attributes do you need to be a good lawyer?

I'm about to begin applying for pupillage, but I'm confused about how the system works. Help!
Positive feedback
What's the protocol if I want to ask for feedback after applications or interviews?
So many firms, so little time

Mastering the problem
I'm toying with the idea of doing a masters degree after my undergraduate studies. It would be a pretty expensive undertaking though. What factors should I take into account in helping me make the decision?
Spoilt for choice
I've just been accepted to all three law schools I applied to but I'm having difficulty deciding which to choose. Location isn't an issue - I'm more interested in working out which will be best for my career. How do I decide?
Pressed for information
People have mentioned that I should be reading the "legal press", but what does that term really mean? As far as mainstream papers go, I like the Independent. Is it sufficient to just read its business pages to get to grips with commercial issues?
Qualification at all costs?
I've been lucky enough to secure a training contract with a regional firm, but I really want to be working in the City as a corporate lawyer. Should I do my training contract and hope to make it into a bigger firm on qualification, or should I decline the offer and look for a training contract that I actually want?
The fear
I have secured a training contract with a major commercial law firm which I'm due to start this September. Is it normal to have been successful in getting such a job, showing aptitude and the necessary skills only to feel completely unqualified?
Vacant stare
I applied for an Immediate Vacancy on LawCareers.Net and have since been asked to come in for an interview. However, I have been applying for so many positions all over the place, I have forgotten everything about the role and don’t even remember sending off the application! Is there any way I can find out?

I am a linguist seeking a career in law. Which languages will earn me kudos with legal recruiters?
Turn detective
How can I find out about law firms other than by looking at their websites, which I know won't necessarily give me a particularly accurate impression?

As a law student with ambitions of qualifying as a barrister, how should I go about deciding which of the Inns of Court to join?
LPC v BPTC
I'm torn between studying the LPC or BPTC. I don't want to resort to flipping a coin, but how else can I decide?
Donkey work
I've been offered an unpaid work placement at a law firm, with the prospect of a training contract. Although I really need the experience on my CV, I'm wary because the position is completely unpaid.  Given the state of the current job market, should I just take it?
The early bird catches the work
I'm a first-year law student and I've just found your site! I'm hoping to become a solicitor and I've heard that you need to start applying early. Where do I begin?
And now, a word from our sponsor
I've just started my LPC but so far haven't had an offer from any of the firms I had interviews with. If I get an offer, will the firm still sponsor my LPC? What about if I don't get a training contract until next year when I've already completed the course?
Close but no cigar
I've just started my LPC. This summer I applied to 20 firms for training contracts and had three interviews but didn't score. What do I do now?
The wrong side of the law
I am a second-year law student currently serving a two-year driving disqualification for drink driving. Could this conviction prevent me from becoming a corporate lawyer?
Problematic practice areas
I will be starting a training contract in 2011, which I am very excited about. However, my firm doesn't practise criminal law, which is something I particularly enjoyed during my legal studies. Does that mean that I will be unable to practise criminal law in my future career?
Filling the gap
Can I take a gap year and go travelling before I start a training contract?
A racy past
A couple of years ago I worked as a lap dancer. I really want to be a lawyer, have finished my LPC and am looking for a training contract. I've found my dream firm; the only problem is that one of the partners is an ex-client! If I apply and he recognises me, could I get into trouble with the Law Society?
State of confusion
I really want to practise law in both the United States and the United Kingdom - is this possible?
Magic circle disenchantment
I have been fortunate enough to secure a training contract with a magic circle firm. The problem is: I really want to be a barrister! Should I pursue the Bar or just be content with what I have?
Work experience woe
I found it difficult (impossible, even) to gain any experience in a law firm or shadowing a solicitor while studying for my degree and LPC. It's been a year since I graduated and the sections for listing legal experience on my training contract applications are still blank. Have I missed the boat for a career in law?
Meet and greet
I recently found an article on your site that pointed to LawCareers.Net Basic Training events as a good way of meeting law firm representatives. It doesn't seem that you are running these events this year, so can you suggest another way for me to meet recruiters?
Ancient history?
I'm in the final year of an LLB and already hold a first class-degree in business. My route to university was, however, rather circuitous. I left school at 16 having only taken one A-Level and I do not hold the 300 UCAS points required by many employers. Do you think my non-standard academic career is likely to impinge on my employment chances?
Recession depression
I finished my LPC over a year ago and have since been struggling to find a training contract or law-related job. I'm pretty sure that most of my problem is caused by the recession, but knowing that doesn't help me work out what to do next. I feel like I'm at a dead end, with little option but to give up - please help!
What difference does it make?
I've nearly finished my law degree and have started thinking about where to study my LPC. It seems that more and more law firms have tie-ins with law schools, developing tailored courses and only sending their futures trainees to that institution. Does this mean that the law school I pick will affect where I can apply for a training contract? What if I want to apply to a firm that has a partnership with a different law school from that which I opt for?
To GDL or to LLB?
I plan to become a barrister and am about to apply for a law conversion course. I was wondering what the major differences between the GDL and graduate-entry LLB are? Which is viewed more favourably by employers?
Bar work
I graduated from Warwick University this year with a 2.1 in law and have been temping ever since. My ambition is to practise as a barrister, so I wanted to take some time out to obtain valuable legal experience. I don't live in London and am not in a position to do unpaid work. Can you suggest other sectors I could look at which could demonstrate my commitment to the Bar and give me some transferable skills?
Which GDL course?
I am a uni student in my final year studying classical literature and civilisation, and I'm interested in converting to law. Is it possible to acquire some sort of league table for the GDL course? There are so many law schools out there, I don't know how to choose!
The fear
I have secured a training contract with a major commercial law firm and am due to start this September. The thought of walking through the doors and being a trainee is daunting and I have no idea if I am going to sink or swim. What could I do between now and starting the job to prepare? Is it normal to have been successful in getting such a job, showing aptitude and the necessary skills only to feel completely unqualified?

Everyone tells me that I should be attending law fairs if I want to meet firms and recruiters, but what's the best way to find out when they are?
Up to speed on sponsorship
I've just started my LPC but so far haven't had an offer from any of the firms I had interviews with. If I get an offer, will the firm still sponsor my LPC? What about if I don't get a training contract until next year when I've already completed the course?
Gimme a break!
I was hoping for a break over the summer but my friend said that I've got to prepare for my training contract applications for next year. What should I be doing?
Defer to common sense
I have received offers for law school, but I don't have much financial support. I was thinking about getting a job for a year to save some money, but I'd have to defer my place. Is this a good or bad idea?
2.2 too low?
I have just received my third-year exam results and have found I achieved a 2.2. I am planning to begin my LPC in September, but I am now worried that I will not be able to obtain a training contract. Should I just give up becoming a solicitor or is there something else I can do to make myself stand out from other law students?
Too late for law?
I completed my LPC a few years ago and, despite a huge amount of effort, I'm yet to find a training contract. Realistically, do I still have a chance of qualifying?
Application frustration
Given the amount of trainee deferrals and redundancies in the legal profession at the moment, should I even bother making applications this year? Would I be better off concentrating on my studies and waiting for the next round of application deadlines?
New York, New York
I recently graduated with a 2.1 in law, but I'm not sure where to go from here. I have found out that it is possible to become a UK solicitor by doing the New York Bar exam and the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test, thus bypassing the need to do the LPC and training contract, but I can't find much information on this way in to the legal profession. What do law firms think of this route?
Through the portal
When I was applying for pupillage, I noticed that OLPAS seemed to have changed. What's different about the new system?
Where have all the paralegals gone?
I graduated from university last year. I'm trying to gain some legal experience before starting my LPC, but there are very few paralegal vacancies around. Would going for a legal secretary qualification help me to progress? How else can I get experience?
Brochure Bonanza
Where can I find more information on firms to get an idea of their culture and style?
Pressed for Information
People have mentioned that I should be reading the "legal press" - what does that really mean? As far as mainstream papers go, I like The Independent. Is it sufficient to just read its business pages to get to grips with commercial issues?

Small Talk, Big Bonus
At a LawCareers.Net Basic Training event I was surprised that I had to make the first move when sparking up a conversation with a recruiter. I didn't know what to say! What's your advice?
Experience Required
I am a mature student in my early 40s changing career to become a solicitor. Although I have a PhD and extensive industry experience behind me, I'm worried that most training contract application forms seem to be designed for people in their early 20s. Are firms receptive to mature candidates? If they are, how can I find out which ones?
Mastering Your Funds
I am a second-year law student and looking into doing an LLM, but don't know how I would fund it. Could I just reapply for an extended loan with the Student Loans Company or do I need to fund the course myself?
Fatal Fails
I studied the GDL last year, failing multiple modules and having to do retakes last August. I have one exam to retake in order to obtain the qualification and achieve a bare pass. I have a 2.1 degree and good A-Levels, and have acquired five months' work experience at a small City firm. I still want to go on to do my LPC, but do I have a realistic chance of gaining a training contract?
Hard Times
I have completed my law degree and LPC with top marks, but I don't have a training contract. And more than ever, because of the state of the economy, it seems to be harder to get valuable, paid work experience. Where can I look and how do I start?

I am a second-year law student, and wondered what I can be doing over my Christmas break to help me get ahead?
Size Matters
I am finding it hard to get a training contract with one of the bigger players in the northwest. Would it be advisable to apply to smaller firms with less rigorous entry standards and train with them, with a view to working my way up? Would the bigger firms be unlikely to consider a job application from someone who had trained at a smaller firm?
A Job Lot
I graduated from university in the summer and plan to take a year out before embarking on the LPC. I am keen to use my time wisely, preferably working as a paralegal, but I cannot seem to find any positions that are open to those that are yet to complete the LPC. What other jobs might be available to a graduate that will look good on the CV and impress potential employers?

Big Name Blues
I'm currently doing boring, unskilled work as a paralegal in a big City firm. But I'm going to apply for competitive training contracts at small media firms where I've got previous experience. Earn, Baby, Earn!
I've worked as a consultant for several years in a large firm, but now wish to become a solicitor. I know I'll have to complete both the GDL and LPC to qualify. And will I be able to sustain my outgoings (mortgage, bills and so on) in the long term?
The Ins and Outs of Inns
I've heard it through the grapevine that the Inns pay students to study the BVC. Is this true? I'd like to know more about these mysterious Inns anyway.
Too Mature for Point Scoring
I'm a mature GDL student and am applying for training contracts, but note with displeasure that many firms stipulate a specific number of UCAS points. I am a first-year law student and I’m not sure what I should be doing to get ahead. Please advise!
A-levels Less Than A Grade
My A-level results were not that good and my UCAS tariff falls short of the majority of major law firms’ requirements. I am 28 years old and my A-levels were taken almost 10 years ago, but most firms do not appear to take this into account in their online pre-screening questions. Should I bother wasting my time applying?

Money Matters
I know that the Law Society recommends a salary that should be paid to trainees, but are there any regulations as to what the minimum salary must be? I have been offered a contract in a small firm, but the salary (if you can call it that!) is £5,000 a year. Is this allowed?

At an upcoming interview at a City firm, I have to do a five-minute presentation on 'what makes me stand out from my peers'. I am not sure what it is I am being asked or how to go about preparing for this. My careers adviser suggests talking about a unique experience, even if it's not linked to law. What do you think? What else might come up in the interview?
Take a Seat
Is it true that you have to specialise in the last seat you are in as a trainee? I ask because I'm interested in intellectual property and don't want to get stuck in something else for the rest of my career.
Does My Brain Look Big in This?
I am a second-year law student, who feels intimidated by the amount of knowledge I must gain to be the best when I graduate and ultimately qualify. I can't stop thinking that I won't have learnt enough by the time I graduate. Does everyone feel like this?
Law v Non-Law
I am a sixth-form student considering either studying law at university or doing a non-law degree followed by a conversion course. Will it be more difficult for me to become a lawyer if I haven't done a law degree? What are the advantages and disadvantages either way?
Honing Your Commercial Skills
In my search for a career in law, all I ever seem to read about is commercial awareness. As an undergraduate, how am I expected to possess this? Are there any short courses, tailored for students, that you would recommend to those wishing to enhance their commercial awareness?
Spoiled for Choice
I've just been accepted at all three law schools to which I applied, but I'm having a problem deciding where to go. Location isn't an issue - I'm more interested in working out which will be best for my career, especially as I'm interested in working for an international law firm. What would those firms prefer?
Interested in ILEX?
I am due to start the part-time LPC in autumn, but I am having second thoughts about it, with no training contract on the horizon. Do you consider the legal executive route a valid, worthwhile and plausible career, with just as good prospects as a solicitor?
Have I Missed the Boat?
I am a non-law graduate considering a career change at the age of 28. As I have already missed the deadline for enrolment on the CPE for this year, do I have to wait another year until I can apply for a training contract?
Legal Sec v Paralegal
I have a law degree and have done my LPC. Having been unsuccessful in the training contract search so far, I would like to get paid work in the legal sector. I'm confused as to the difference between a paralegal and a legal secretary. Can I apply for both types of position? Or are specific qualifications needed to be a legal secretary?
Are you Experienced?
I am a third-year law student studying in another country for a year. I don't have any work experience because I can't fit it in around my part-time jobs. Also, I don't have the academics to get into a firm that pays for work experience. Do you have any advice as to how I can get experience while still earning?
Age of Reason
I have heard that there is a new age discrimination law coming into force later this year. Will this have any effect on firm recruitment procedures?
TSG AOK
I am a third-year law student. What is the Trainee Solicitors' Group, and how can it help me?
Research, research, research
In applications it says you are supposed to know what type of firm you are applying to. Is there a prescribed method when researching on a firm?
Credit Where Accredit's Due
Having just finished my LPC, and being interested in becoming a criminal law solicitor, I am thinking of training to become police station accredited. I was wondering whether you know what the general conditions are and if you have any advice on how to go about it. Would it be worthwhile?
Right on Target
I would like to know what law firms mean when they talk about "target hours". Is this a reliable indicator of how demanding the firm is? What is the average number of target hours or isn't there one?
The Route of the Problem
Why is it that all advice to wannabe lawyers is aimed at those students expecting a 2.1 who are following the traditional route of applying for a training contract two years in advance? Not all of us fit into this pattern!
Train Me!
When trainees qualify in certain seats, how much training are they given to successfully perform in their qualification area? Will a trainee learn the relevant legislation, case law and statutory instruments throughout their six-month seat just by research and guidance? I have been worried about this for some time.
Mastering the Problem
I'm toying with the idea of doing a masters degree after my undergraduate studies. It would be a pretty expensive undertaking though. What factors should I take into account in helping me make the decision?
In-House Hustler
I want to train at a commercial organisation (eg, Shell or Marks & Spencer), but how do I find out which ones are authorised to train and have vacancies?
Preaching to the Converted
I'm a non-law student and I've heard that there's a conversion course I can do in order to become a lawyer. Can you tell me more?
Swinging Both Ways
I'm confused as to whether to become a barrister or a solicitor. As I only intend to complete the LPC/BVC once I've successfully secured a training contract/pupillage, please advise me as to whether it would be acceptable to apply for both.
Go for the Gap!
I am currently studying the LPC and have a training contract with a City firm. Although I am due to start in September 2006 and took a year out prior to university, I am keen to take another gap year in order to go travelling. However, I don't want the firm to doubt my commitment to a career in the law. What can I do?
Partial to Part-Time
Do many firms offer graduates the opportunity to do their training contract while at the same time undertaking the LPC part time?
Cashflow Crisis
What are some of the ways that I can get financial support for the funding of my LPC?
The Old Switcheroo
What retraining is involved if someone wants to change from being a barrister to a solicitor, or vice versa?
Going Public
Is it possible for a solicitor to qualify in public international law? If so, where can I apply for a training contract?
Defining our Terms
I hope I don't sound daft, but I have some questions - what is a fee earner and how are they paid? What is a paralegal and is it different from a legal assistant? What is the magic circle? What does 'LLP' stand for? It's all rather confusing.
Wage slave
I have been offered a full-time job working for a local solicitor as a paralegal. Having just completed my LPC, can you please give me some guidelines to the salary I should be looking at for this position?
Training under review
I'm sure that I should know more about this, but can you tell me what the Training Framework Review is all about? Is it going to affect me any time soon?
What is the Oracle?
I'd be interested to find out more about The Oracle and its function. Can you help?
To BVC or not to BVC
I recently went to a website frequented by solicitors, which stated that if someone wishes to take the BVC they should only do so if they have a first class degree and a large scholarship. Is this advice accurate? I feel pressured into making a decision as I'm stuck between doing the LPC or BVC and have just finished the second year of my law degree.
Pick a Provider
I have a place to do the GDL at one provider, but I'm not sure if it has a good reputation. Where is the best place to do the GDL? Is any one institution better than another?
A Trio of Vac Schemes
I have recently been accepted on three vacation placements at medium-sized firms. However, when it comes to applying for training contracts this summer, it will be before the placements have taken place. How do I show that I will have work experience by the time the training contract will commence?
Contentious v Non-contentious
Present training regulations require that at least one of a trainee's seats should involve contentious/non-contentious work. Could you please distinguish between these two areas and also explain why this is an important issue for trainees.
Not Just for Commercial Lawyers
I am getting slightly panicky about this business of having to be commercially aware! I am applying for training contracts at the moment, but have already decided I want to qualify in personal injury. I have very little interest in commercial law and do not want to work in this field. Surely it is only important to show in-depth awareness of commercial issues if you want to be a commercial lawyer?!
A Good Reception
I am a first-year law student and have been offered a job at my local law centre. The problem is I will be working one day a week, just answering phone calls at reception, with a chance eventually, to take on cases. I am wondering if and how it will help me in my career. Do you think I should turn down this offer of reception work and instead try a few law firms to get some work experience that will be useful?
The Big Apple Bar
I'm a final year student applying for the BVC. I've been advised that due to poor A-level results, I might have a better chance of gaining a place if I apply next year, after I know my degree classification. Someone has suggested taking the part-time New York Bar course between now and then to open up my options. What do you think?
Learning About Firm Deals
I have heard that firms are keen for applicants to be able to talk knowledgably about recent deals. How do I find out about a firm's recent deals, and how do I best understand and use this information?
Polish that CV
I am having problems applying for training contracts. I think the main reason is because I did a GNVQ in Business instead of A Levels. At the time I was not sure about what I wanted to do and did not know that it would affect my chances in any way. I obtained a 2.1 degree, am doing the LPC at a top law school and have work experience but still have no training contract. I can't even get past the initial hurdles and obtain an interview. Please help.
Law as a Second Career
I'm 40 years of age and have a professional background. I'm keen to retrain as a lawyer, but would law firms be interested in me at this stage in my life?
It's All About Timing
I am currently doing my CPE and intend to start the BVC in September 2006, to give me time to find sufficient funds. Is it usual to apply now and defer my place until then, or is it better to wait until October of this year? What else should/could I be doing in the meantime?
Vac Scheme Dreams
So far I have had four interviews and one assessment day out of 15 or so applications, and only have one vacation placement so far. At my university some people have three or four placements lined up - if I only have one, am I at a serious disadvantage when it comes to applying for training contracts? Is there anything else I can do that will help me really stand out?
Making a Part-time Commitment
I recently read in a newspaper supplement that more universities are to offer the Bar Vocational Course as a part-time course at weekends and evenings, stretching over two years rather than one. This would be incredibly useful to me as it would allow me to earn the money to pay for it during the week and be with my family. However, would chambers look unfavourably on this as showing a lack of enthusiasm or commitment?
Specialisation
Is it possible for a solicitor to specialise in more than one type of law? If so, do they have to be in the same general area, or could you specialise in two types of law that you are interested in and deal with cases in both?
BVC Scholarship Anxiety
I have a BVC scholarship interview soon, which I am feeling nervous about. I know that preparation is the key, but can you please give me any suggestions as to what I should do and what questions to expect?
From Local to Global
If I undertake a training contract within local government, will I be able to switch to a top-notch private practice firm upon qualification? Does this sort of training stand me in good stead for the future?
LPC Fee Query
I am starting the LPC in September but am without a training contract. I hope to work in a private client firm when I graduate. If I go ahead and do my LPC and get a training contract afterwards, is that firm likely to refund my LPC fees?
Red-brick Favouritism?
I am disgruntled after one of the BVC providers to which I have applied informed me that it "shouldn't disadvantage me too much" that I went to a new university, despite the fact that I got a 2:1. Am I just wasting my time if this is the universal attitude?
CV Conundrum
By my own admission I have a fairly dismal CV that seems to be getting me nowhere. I can't fathom where I'm going wrong though. I've written down my entire work history - what more can I do?!
Coping with Interview Angst
I have a few vac scheme interviews lined up. Tell me, how different are such interviews to those for training contracts? How should I prepare? Can I ask about the future of the firm at this stage?
Bright Lights, Big City?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of working at a city firm versus a provincial firm?
Vac Schemes: The Knowledge
I'm a non-law student, and confused about obtaining a summer vacation placement. What sort of firms should I be applying to and what level of knowledge will be required to make a success of a placement?
Part-Time LPC
I've been offered places on full and part-time LPCs. I currently work as a paralegal. My employers will allow me up to 15 days off per year (unpaid) to do my LPC. Is this enough time off to do the LPC part time? How much time will I need to put in each week?
UCAS Points Pain
I've got a 2:1 law degree and I'm applying for training contracts. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to get past the first stage of the application process because of my incredibly low UCAS points. What do I need to do to make myself more marketable?
A Taxing Problem
I'm a third-year law student and I want a career in law - preferably tax law. The only problem is that I haven't yet applied for a 2006 training contract. Am I too late to apply and if so, what should I do?!
Covering Letters: The Facts
I'm currently applying for vacation placements and am wondering what kind of information I should include in the cover letters. The relevant information about myself is included in my CV!

I'm a third-year student and I've just started going to presentations by LPC providers. I recently went to one and was told that certain LPC providers are preferred by firms over others! Is this true? How do I find out more?
Pupil Panic
I'm doing an LLM in Public International Law and am keen to start the BVC September 2005. I'd like to start applying for pupillages now, but lack any work experience. Is it possible to set up a mini-pupillage by Christmas 2004, bearing in mind it's now the end of November?
Vac Scheme Woe
I'm a final-year LLB student, on course for a 2:1. In my second year I was keen on becoming a barrister so didn't apply for any law firm vac schemes. Now I've decided I want to be a solicitor. Will firms want to give a vac scheme place to a third-year student?
Application Overdrive
Between June and September I sent off 40 training contract applications, but I didn't get so much as an interview. I'm about to start the GDL. Should I do applications for vac schemes, training contracts or both?
Pride and Prejudice
Is it ok to apply for more than one internship for a given period? I'm considering Christmas internships and I'm worried that by applying to several firms and then turning some down, I might experience negative repercussions when I later apply to them for training contracts.
Work Experience for Non-Law Students
I'm a non-law undergraduate. How should I go about getting relevant work experience when the vacation schemes seem to be geared towards law students?
A Paralegal Stop-Gap
I've lined up a training contract with a magic circle firm and I'm taking a year out before starting the City LPC. I plan to do some travelling, but need to earn some money first. I was considering paralegaling, but I'm not sure how to go about applying.
A Change of Heart
I've got a few training contract interviews lined up with firms that are offering sponsorship. What if a firm recruits me, sponsors me through the CPE and then halfway through the course I decide that law is not for me?
Just the Job
I have just completed the second year of my LLB degree. Will a lack of legal work experience go against me when I start applying for training contracts?
Dare I Defer?
I'm toying with the idea of deferring the start of my training contract - perhaps to do some travelling and, frankly, just bum around for a bit. At the application stage, is it a good idea to mention this or not?
Why Do I Fail?
How come the others on my law course are being feted with invites to interviews but I can't so much as a foot in the door with a place on a vac scheme? I wouldn't mind but I'm a better candidate than some of them!
Gypsy Gripe
What's the deal with the 'local connection' that many firms now ask for? Having lived and worked in three different counties I get the impression that I don't have sufficient ties to any one place. Are law firms really so superficial?
I Don't Have a 'Greatest Personal Achievement'!
Amidst the terrible questions asked on training contract application forms is one I'm finding particularly hard to answer: "what is your greatest personal achievement?". Help!

Is there a limit on how many firms you can apply to? With deadlines fast approaching, I want to cram in as many applications as possible. My careers adviser nearly swore when I mentioned doing this though. What gives?

I'm a final year law student. I'm deferring my place at law school for a year but I've heard that firms frown on later students applying for training contracts as they assume they've been rejected in the past. Help.
Pre-Exam Panic
I've enjoyed my first year at university - so much so that I've just realised my law exams are looming and I've been too busy partying to do any revision. Are first year exams that important? They don't really count in the long run, do they
If At First You Don't Succeed..
After graduating I applied to a number of firms and got interviews, but no offers. Since then I've taken some time out, paralegaled for a bit and done an LL.M. Is it worth reapplying to firms that rejected me?
LPC: Best Before When?
I know many people who have completed their LPC and have yet to secure a training contract. Does the LPC have an expiry date? Will firms only offer training contracts if you've completed the LPC recently?
Bamboozled Backpacker
I'm a second year law student at Leicester. Recently, I've decided to take a year out. How can I sell this as a good idea to recruiters? Also, should I take a year out before or after the LPC?

My son is interested in becoming a barrister, but is worried that there are a lot of applications for relatively few jobs. Is there any way of ensuring success?
Keeping Abreast of the Law
I'm a second year non-law student hoping to pursue a career in law. Are there any weekly law publications that I should be reading so that I'm aware of commercial developments and prepared for interviews next year?

I feel so inadequate and thick sometimes. When I go for interviews I always seem to be up against straight-A students and when I don't do well at university it just adds to my insecurity.
Asking for Feedback
What's the etiquette with asking for feedback on interviews and applications? I'd like to know where I've gone wrong in the past.

I'm an overseas student and I'll need a work permit to work for a firm of solicitors. I'm worried that this will affect my chances of securing a training contract, please help!

Despite my qualifications and experience, I'm still seeking a training contract. Now I hear that a colleague has qualified without having to do a training contract - he's ILEX qualified with four years less experience than me. Help!

Honesty Is the Best Policy
I'm in the final year of my law degree and expect to achieve a 2:1. Unfortunately, I've been unable to secure a training contract - could this be due to my A-levels? I only got a B, two C's and a D.

Browsing though advertisements for trainee solicitors, I've noticed that many firms give special mention to legal aid work. Why does this area of the law merit such special attention?

What to do with a 2:2

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

At the end of this year and ask to defer, or at the end of my third year?
Better Late than Never?

Would I need to apply now (I think I've left it too late)? Also, can students do their LPC and training at the same time? Should I just apply for a vacation placement in the meantime or am I too late for that too? Please help.
Banking on the Law
I work as a financial consultant for one of the big four UK banks. I graduated from De Montfort University in 1995 with a degree in Law & Accounting, majoring in Law. Will I have to take another course before I do the LPC?

Most (if not all) firms seem to have a minimum requirement of a 2:1 before they will accept an application for a training contract. Do you know of any commercial/private client firms that will consider applications from graduates with a 2:2?

I graduated from Leeds University with a 2.1 BA Hons in sociology. I'm applying to do my CPE Law Conversion and arranging some work experience as I'm concerned that my poor A-Levels (BCC) will prevent me from securing a training contract. I cannot for the life of me find any books or guides or handbooks that could help me with this process! I wonder if you know of any books that could help me in any way? Many Thanks.
