updated on 08 April 2014

Herbert Smith Freehills LLP (HSF) has confirmed that it will allow trainee solicitors from its London and Hong Kong offices to do an overseas secondment in Australia.

Following the merger of Herbert Smith with Australian firm Freehills in October 2012, the international firm now boasts 2,800 lawyers and 20 offices.  Its Australian network includes offices in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. According to the firm’s website, approximately 80% of trainees who wish to go on a secondment have the chance to do so.  Other HSF international secondment opportunities include seats in Abu Dhabi, Moscow, Paris and Singapore.  The firm also offers client secondments, with businesses such as BAE, Liberty, Credit Suisse and UBS.

Jason Ricketts, HSF Australian managing partner, commented: "Since many of our clients and their projects are global, we need lawyers with an international mindset to deal with the complex elements of cross-border matters. The secondments provide lawyers with valuable experience working in an international office, building their internal network and improving firm integration."
