Roundtable discussion highlights advantages of an in-house training contract

General counsel attendees discussed the benefits of hiring an in-house trainee solicitor at a recent roundtable discussion hosted at the Law Society.

During the discussion, the attendees agreed that there are a number of advantages of offering in-house training contracts: early exposure to a commercial environment and significant client-facing time; rapid development of business acumen; contributing to the whole business decision process, and gaining value as a business partner as well as lawyer. As reported by The Law Society Gazette, one general counsel did raise the concern that such a commercially-minded and experienced trainee might be at significant risk of going back into private practice where such skills would be highly valued.
