Majority of Bar pupils in 2011-12 enrolled on BPTC without having landed a pupillage

Some 70% of first-six pupil barristers in 2011-12 enrolled on the BPTC without having secured pupillage, according to the joint annual report made by the Bar Council and the Bar Standards Board earlier this month.
The report also showed that elitism remains a problem at the Bar. The data shows that, despite the fact that only around seven percent of children nationwide attend fee-paying schools, 35% of first-six pupils in 2011-12 (the most recent year for which statistics are available) underwent fee-paying secondary education. Meanwhile, as Lawyer2B reports, only 25% of those pupils attended a non-Oxbridge or Russell Group university, with 28% having attended Oxbridge alone.
The figures also revealed that 55% of the pupils had a 2:1 or 2:2, while 33% had achieved first-class degrees.
