Law and business: commercial news round-up 24.10.14

Immerse yourself this week in some quite depressing economic news – of EU budgetary demands, Tesco’s massive hole in its profits and increased government spending. Still, it’s not all bad news – you might soon be getting even cheaper books from Amazon:
- The government has borrowed more than it did last year, to the tune of £1.6 billion. This is 10% higher than in September 2013 – as such, its much hoped-for deficit reduction looks increasingly unlikely.
- Tesco’s annus horribilis continues, as it is revealed that the supermarket behemoth has a hole in its profits that is even bigger than originally thought and which extends back several years.
- More grist to the UKIP mill, as the United Kingdom is given a bill by the European Union for an extra £1.7 billion for outperforming expectations in recent years. Cue anger and indignation from all ends of the UK political spectrum.
- In the world of the e-book, Amazon is king, and never more so now that it has agreed a deal on pricing with international publisher Simon & Schuster.
