Law and business: commercial news round-up 19.11.15

Short and to the point this week – read these to improve your sense of what’s going on in the commercial world:
- The government has sold £13 billion worth of mortgages that it acquired when it bailed out Northern Rock in the midst of the financial crisis.
- The atrocities committed in Paris had an immediate effect on global markets, particularly affecting companies in the leisure/travel sector.
- Marriott Hotels secured a $12.2 billion merger with Starwood, owner of the Sheraton and W hotel chains, to create the world’s biggest hotelier.
- Asda has announced its fifth consecutive quarter of declining sales, as it faces stiff competition from Aldi and Lidl, and predicts a tough Christmas ahead for retailers…
- … which could partly be due to shoppers holding back and spending all their cash on Black Friday.
- Finally, hot off the press: the report into the collapsed bank HBOS has just been released (Thursday lunchtime), including a recommendation that 10 of its former executives be banned from ever working in the City again.
