JLD encourages support for SRA's minimum salary consultation; confirms position on voluntary code

The Junior Lawyers Division (JLD) is encouraging members to participate in the Law Society’s consultation on a recommended minimum salary.
Following the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s (SRA) abolition of the regulatory minimum wage for trainee solicitors in August 2014, the Law Society is now consulting on a proposal to implement a recommended minimum salary for trainees. Max Harris, chair of the JLD, urged members to support the effort by participating in a survey (which closed on 26 April).
In other news, the JLD remains one of three signatories of the voluntary code to good practice in trainee recruitment following the announcement that the SRA has withdrawn its signature. Along with the Association of Graduate Recruiters and the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, the JLD is hoping to modernise the code and potentially seek a replacement signatory. Writing in Young Lawyer, Harris comments that "the principles of the code, if not the code itself, are valuable for both firms and students".
