Future Bar Training consultation extended by BSB

The Bar Standards Board (BSB) has extended its consultation on the future of Bar training to 31 January 2017, in light of a new proposal from the Council of the Inns of Court (COIC).
First published on 3 October 2016, the BSB’s consultation document puts forward three possible approaches to training for the Bar. This new, fourth proposal from the COIC, which also has the support of the Bar Council, is based on a proposal set out by Derek Wood QC in July.
Helen Hudson, head of legal development at Nottingham Law School, said: “At Nottingham Law School we support any initiative that widens access to the profession. We have also worked with the Bar for many years to integrate learning of skills, legal principles and practical application. The proposals appear to divorce the key elements required for effective practice. The integration of the various elements of practical legal skills is essential if we are to produce effective practitioners.”
