Firms reveal retention rates

updated on 06 September 2012

Law firms across the country have released their trainee retention figures for September 2012.

Freshfields recorded the highest figure among the Magic Circle firms, keeping on 89% of its trainees. Slaughter and May was close behind with 88%, while Allen & Overy, Linklaters and Clifford Chance rounded off a solid return for the Magic Circle with retention rates of 79%, 78% and 77% respectively.

A select few firms also revealed 100% retention rates. As reported by RollOnFriday, Shoosmiths, Farrer & Co, Burges Salmon and Kennedys were among the firms able to offer every trainee a place. International firm Charles Russell came close, keeping on 18 of its 19 trainees (95%).

Firms at the opposite end of the scale include Mishcon de Reya and Orrick, which retained just 50% of their trainees. Other big firms to report less-than-inspiring retention rates include SJ Berwin (59%) and Nabarro (69%).
