Figures from Bar Co and BSB reveal significant drop in tenancy numbers

updated on 11 July 2014

The Bar Council and Bar Standards Board have confirmed that there were 335 newly-registered tenancies for 2011-12. This is a massive 38% drop from 541 in 2010-11, and significantly below the five-year average of 499.

As reported in Legal Futures, the figures were contained in the annual Bar Barometer. Still, it is worth noting that the actual figure us better than the figure originally released, which erroneously stated that the tenancy number was just 194.

Other key stats include the following:

  • More men than women secured tenancy - just 44% of tenancies were given to women in 2011-12, a reduction from 52% in 2010-11.
  • Eleven percent of new tenants were from a BME background, although this figure was not significantly different to other years.
  • Around 75% of new tenants in 2011-12 were aged between 25 and 34, with a further 9% between 35 and 44.
