Oxford tops Cambridge as top law faculty

In contrast to The Guardian's recent league table revealing Cambridge University to be the UK's top law faculty, a Legal Week poll of 3,700 university law students has put Oxford University ahead of its rival. The study of student perceptions - carried out by Legal Week's research arm - found that 78% of Oxford students rated its teaching as excellent; compared with excellent ratings from only 69.5% of Cambridge students.

University of Oxford Law Faculty Dean Timothy Endicott told Legal Week: "The difference at Oxford is the high level of attention given to each student, with only 10 students per faculty member, and tutors reading students’ essays weekly and discussing their work in tutorials. In addition to this, we have also been working on introducing innovative new elements to the course, including compulsory mooting."

University College London came in third place, with 61% of its students ranking teaching as excellent. The trio of universities were the only three to receive excellent ratings by more than 60% of their students. Newcastle and Durham Universities followed closely behind, with 55.5% and 47% respectively.
