The state of the UK economy dominated news schedules this week, with George Osborne's 2014 budget filling the papers and TV channels. To learn more about what was revealed, as well as lots of other interesting business developments, read on:
- Vodafone continues its European expansion, buying a Spanish cable company for £6 billion.
- Safe as houses: Berkeley Group says it is building more houses than ever, with 30% more planned for 2014 than at its 2007 peak.
- Nemat Shafik, former MD of the IMF, has been appointed as deputy governor of the Bank of England, arguably putting her in line to be the first ever woman governor when Mark Carney steps down.
- George Osborne revealed his 2014 budget on Wednesday, with gains for exporters and "makers, doers and savers". Still, a PR disaster followed with the Tory party chairman’s ill-judged "bingo and beer" tweet.
