An introduction to careers in patents and trademarks - featuring an invention scenario: genetically modified ‘Woundup-Ready’ bees

Presented by Dr Richard Williams, a partner and head of the life science group at Harrison Goddard Foote LLP and his colleague, trade mark attorney Adjoa Anim.

This talk is highly relevant to any student with a new or developed interest in intellectual property. Any student considering practising at the commercial Bar, IP Bar or as an IP solicitor will need to be aware of the ways in which patent attorneys and trade mark attorneys are involved in the creation and exploitation of intellectual property rights.

The format of the talk will be a general introduction to patents and trade marks and the role played by patent and trade mark attorneys followed by a mock guidance based on the invention scenario.

The scenario engages a wide range of interesting problems along the path to acquiring intellectual property: When is it commercially viable to seek a patent? Can a patent be acquired over a genetically modified organism? What alternative avenues are there to protect an idea, if not through IP? Can a trade mark bearing the name of the inventor infringe another's mark?

No preparation is required. Please arrive for a prompt 5pm start.
